What is Firebrat?

Firebrats (Thermobia domestica) are small, wingless, greyish-brown insects with a mottled appearance. They are closely related to silverfish but prefer warm, humid environments such as kitchens, boiler rooms, and around heating systems. They feed on starchy materials, paper, fabrics, and other carbohydrate-rich substances.

Appearance & behavior

Size: long, flat body, 12–19 mm.
Colour: dull grey or silvery.
Behaviour: very fast, nocturnal and light-sensitive, hiding by day.
Where & what they damage: bathrooms, basements, laundry rooms and attics; they ruin books, photos, documents, fabrics and wallpaper adhesives.
